Celebrating World Literacy Day: Building Peace through Literacy at La-Bawaleshie Presby

On September 30, 2024, the Rotaract Club of Accra-East Legon celebrated World Literacy Day with the students of La-Bawaleshie Presby, emphasizing the theme “Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.” This event was a reminder of the power of education in fostering harmony and bridging divides within our communities.

Literacy plays a pivotal role in promoting mutual understanding by equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to engage in meaningful dialogue. With education, we break down barriers, alleviate misunderstandings, and foster a culture of peace. This was the driving philosophy behind our engagement at La-Bawaleshie Presby.

The day commenced with a captivating session on literacy and its role in building peaceful societies. Our speakers highlighted how reading and writing go beyond academics, helping to cultivate empathy, tolerance, and effective communication—cornerstones of a peaceful world. The students, ranging from various grade levels, enthusiastically participated, sharing their thoughts on how reading has broadened their perspectives.

In line with our commitment to supporting education, we also made a significant donation of books and mathematics sets to the students. This gesture was aimed at nurturing their academic growth while encouraging their love for learning. The excitement in their eyes was a testament to the impact these resources would have on their educational journey.

Our club believes that literacy is a tool for empowerment, and by contributing to these young learners’ education, we are investing in a more peaceful and understanding future. The students left the event not only with new educational materials but also with a deeper appreciation for how literacy can be a catalyst for change.

As we commemorate World Literacy Day, let us remember that every book we open, every word we write, and every idea we share has the potential to build bridges of understanding and pave the way for a more peaceful world.

Together, through literacy, we can cultivate a generation that values peace, mutual respect, and global understanding.
