While Boxing Day is often marked with rest and celebration, the Rotaract Club of Accra East Legon (ROCAEL), in partnership with Mount Calvary Cross Ministries and the Josey’s Health Corner, chose to give back in a more impactful way.
On Friday, December 27, 2024, the partners brought essential healthcare services to residents of Alogboshie through a community health screening exercise aimed at promoting wellbeing during the festive season.

The outreach provided free medical screening and consultations for over 150 residents of the community. Services offered included blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, malaria and typhoid screening, Hepatitis B testing, blood level checks, diet therapy, and general medical consultations.
In addition to the screenings, basic medications were distributed to beneficiaries where necessary, including antibiotics, blood tonics, malaria medication, dewormers, and other essential medicines, ensuring participants received both diagnosis and immediate support.
The success of the exercise was driven by strong collaboration among partners. Josey’s Health Corner provided medical experts who supported the screenings, while Mount Calvary Cross Ministries contributed medical supplies and healthcare professionals from the congregation. Additionally, medical experts who are also Rotaractors volunteered their time and expertise to support the exercise.

The outreach also benefited from the strong presence of the Rotaract Club of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, whose members turned up in their numbers. Many of the volunteers are students training in various medical disciplines, contributing hands-on support under supervision.
The exercise received backing from the traditional authority, including the chief of Alogboshie, whose support facilitated smooth community engagement, reflecting Rotary’s emphasis on local partnerships and collaboration.
The initiative was further supported by medical supplies manufacturer Letap Quality Health Care, which donated medications for the outreach. This marks the second time Letap Quality Health Care has partnered with ROCAEL on a community health initiative.
Speaking after the exercise, President of the Rotaract Club of Accra East Legon, Shafeeq Nii Odoi, said the activity reflects the club’s commitment to service.
“Boxing Day gave us the opportunity to extend care beyond celebration. Through partnerships like these, we are able to bring basic healthcare closer to communities that need it most,” he said.
The lead of Mount Calvary Cross Ministries, Mr. Alex Twumasi also commended the collaboration.
“This initiative highlights the strength of partnership and volunteerism. We are grateful to everyone who contributed their time and resources to make this outreach successful,” the pastor noted.
ROCAEL expressed appreciation to all partners, medical personnel, volunteers, traditional leaders, and the people of Alogboshie for their cooperation and support, and reaffirmed its commitment to implementing impactful projects that promote health, wellbeing, and sustainable community development.
